Cellos Over $50,000
Lorenzo Storioni, Cremona, 1780. Storioni is considered to be the last of the great Cremonese makers and his work is most highly esteemed. This beautiful cello was used for many years by a professional cellist. It is made on a petite model and would a most excellent choice for a musician looking for a comfortable cello. This is an excellent example of Storioni’s work and is illustrated in Dmitry Gindin’s beautiful book "The Late Cremonese Violin Makers" (pp.148-151)
Johannes Cuypers, The Hague, 1767. Cuypers has been called "The Dutch Stradivari" by many experts because of the high quality of his workmanship, but in many respects, his work shares many of the qualities of the best Parisian makers of the late 18th. Century. The tone is full, warm and very rich and would be a wonderful choice for a soloist or chamber musician.
Antonio Casini, Modena, 1678. We are especially proud to offer this very fine 17th Century cello. It is rare for a cello like this to become available. The sound is superb, BIG, full, deep, and rich.
Gaetano Gadda, labeled Stefano Scarampella, Mantua, 1910. Gadda was the only pupil of Scarampella and was his successor. A number of instruments that were thought of as having been made by Scarampella were actually made by Gadda. This is an especially nice example and is tonally one of the finest cellos we have had in some time.
Pietro Gaggini, Nice 1943. Gaggini was the nephew and student of Alberto Blanchi in Nice and took over his business in the 1930's. This exceptionally attractive cello has a rich red-brown varnish with a craquelure that many collectors find most attractive. The sound is full, rich and very responsive.
Natale Carletti, Pieve de Cento, 1971. Natale Carletti received his diploma in cello performance before beginning his studies in violin making with his father Carlo. He seemed to have specialized in cello making. The sound is brilliant but with warmth, very focused, and responsive. This cello is in exceptionally good condition.
Fine old French Cello, c. late 19th. Century. This beautifully made French cello has an absolutely superb tone, vibrant, rich and expansive. It is a very special cello with a tone that you don’t normally find in this price range.
Cellos From $20,000 to $50,000
Louis Guerson, Paris, c. 1760. Guerson was one of the most important French makers of his generation and his instruments are highly esteemed. Here is a wonderful opportunity to own a fine 18th Century cello at a price much more affordable than an Italian instrument of that period. This cello has excellent tone.
William John Acton, London, 1903. In recent years, English cellos have increased in desirability, in large part because of their excellent tone. This interesting cello has an excellent tone, full, dark, and rich. It would be an especially good choice for a chamber music player. It is in superb condition.
Label of Lupot, possibly Parisian, c1850. Since we don't actually know who made this interesting cello, it represents an excellent opportunity for the musician who isn't interested in a cello with an important name attached to it. This cello has a nice, sweet, dark tone.
Josef Krenn, Vienna, 1932. This maker was one of the best Viennese makers of his time. He established his shop in 1921 and worked there until the early 1950's. This exceptional cello has a rich, responsive tone with plenty of power.

Daniele Tonarelli, Cremona, 2008. Daniele Tonarelli graduated from the Cremona violin making school in 1994 and after working with Marco Nolli, established his own workshop in Cremona. This beautiful cello is the second we have received from him. The tone is clear, rich, and resonant.
Old Tyrolean, c. late 19th Century. This interesting cello has a beautifully carved female head in place of the scroll. The instrument possesses an excellent, warm tone.
Giorgio Grisales, Cremona, 2010. Grisales has become one of the most important and influential of the contemporary Cremonese makers. He began his studies in Cremona in 1983 and finished in Milan before returning to Cremona. Our resident cellist finds this cello to be amazingly resonant, with a big, ringing sound.
Marcello Bellei, Modena, 2007. Last year we received our first cello from this maker and we were so impressed that we ordered more. We now have three of his cellos. This gifted young maker trained with the Scrollavezzas in Parma and worked for a number of important makers before opening his own workshop three years ago in Modena. His workmanship is elegant and superb.
Stefano Trabucchi, Cremona, 2010. This cello displays the most beautiful and elegant workmanship. The tone is quite big, focused and brilliant. Our staff cellist found it easy and enjoyable to play. Trabucci graduated with honors at the violin making school in Cremona in 1988 and has had his own workshop after working with Marco Nolli. He has won a number of awards for his work.
Carlos Funes Vitanza, San Francisco, 2008. This Cremona trained maker is well-known in this area. Crafted from beautiful Italian poplar, this is an attractive and excellent sounding instrument.
Virgilio Capellini, Cremona, 1991. Capellini is considered one of the best Cremonese makers of his generation and is especially noted for his cellos. This attractive example is in excellent condition and has a full, warm tone.
Cellos From $10,000 to $20,000
Giancarlo Stanzani, Bologna, 1990. Stanzani started when very young with Enrico Piretti before going on his own in 1958. Over the years he has won a number of awards and medals for his work. This cello has a beautiful dark golden red varnish over exceptionally beautiful wood.
Workshop of Scrollavezza & Zanre, Parma, 2010. This beautiful cello was made under the direction of our friends Elisa Scrollavezza and Andre Zanre. The sound is large, powerful, responsive. It is offered at an attractive price, and will develop into a very exceptional instrument.
Paul Hart, Mount Pleasant, UT, 2009. We have just received two cellos from this esteemed maker who is especially renowned for his cellos (Paul is an excellent cellist). He taught at the Violin Making School of America where he trained some of the most important makers working today, including Jay Ifshin.

Labeled Augiere, French, mid 19th Century. This fine French cello is offered at an attractive price due to repairs which in no way affect the excellent sound.
Bernd Dimbath, Bubenreuth, 2006. This is a very striking instrument with back and side of highly flamed poplar. The tone quality is exceptional for an instrument in this price range.

C.G. Stewart, Los Angeles, 1918. Stewart was a cellist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic and made a number of excellent instruments, mostly cellos. His work is well thought of in the Los Angeles area.
