Andrea Caccia began his career spending time in the workshop of his uncle Mario Gadda who determined that Andrea had a gift for violin making. After ten years in Mario's workshop, Andrea opened his own shop in 2004 and has since become very successful. His work is very personal but follows the Mantua tradition through Gaetano and Mario Gadda back to Gaetano's teacher the great Stefano Scarampella.

Elise Scrollavezza and Andrea Zanre create fine instruments in their workshop as well as teaching in the violin making school founded by Elisa's father Renato. This fine cello was made under their direction. The sound is refined with a big lower end.

After a four year apprenticeship in Bern, Otto Schenk came to the U.S. and worked with Hans Weisshaar in Los Angeles for four years and then in New York with Jacques Français four more years before returning to Bern where he set up his own workshop. Over the years he has won numerous awards at major competitions.

As a member of a large family of violin makers, Louis (Isadore) Cabasse studied with his father Charles and with J.B.Vuillaume in Paris. He was especially noted for his cellos.

Elisa Scrollavezza

Elisa’s father Renato founded the famous violin making school in Parma so she was deeply involved in the world of violin making from childhood. In 2002, Elisa formed a partnership with Andrea Zanrè, also a Scrollavezza student. In their workshop in the historic center of Parma, they concentrate on making new instruments along with training the next generation of violin makers.

Gary Vessel

Gary grew up in the Bay Area and with the help of Boyd Poulson, went to the Violin Making School of America, enrolling at the young age of 17. He then went to Germany to perfect his skills working with a number of makers, returning in 1990. After working with Rafael Carrabba in Seattle, he opened his own shop in Salt Lake. He is highly respected for his excellent work. This would be a great choice for ensemble playing.

Thomas Hoyer

The Hoyer family of violin makers goes all the way back to the 1750's. After the second world war, the family moved from Schoenbach in Bohemia to Bubenreuth. Thomas studied with his father Georg Hoyer and received his Master's Certificate from the Mittenwald violin making school in 1998. The back and ribs of this cello are crafted from pearwood.

We don't know the makers of this cello, but it has an amazing antique sound with excellent projection. It would be a great choice for a soloist.

Johann Brandner

Brandner worked with a number of German makers , finally with Otto Bausch in Leipzig before setting up his own workshop in his native Schönbach in 1875. He soon became very successful. This cello has a facsimile Amati label indicating the model along with the maker’s label dated 1906.

Dating back to 1952, the firm of Heinrich Gill was acquired by violin maker Bernd Dimbath in 1990. Bernd studied with makers in Berlin as well as the violin making school in Mittenwald. Over the last 32 years the Gill violins, violas and cellos have become some of the finest string instruments made in Germany. The model 394 is one of their finest quality cellos.

Mirecourt, France has a centuries old tradition of violin fine making and today the Aubert workshop is carrying on that tradition. Aubert's workshop creates fine violins, violas and cellos of exceptionally high quality. This fine cello is modeled after the work of the great Jean Baptiste Vuillaume of Paris.

Alberto Soria

Although Mexico is not known as a center of violin making, there are some excellent Mexican makers. Among them is Alberto Soria. From a musical family, Alberto studied at the Lutherie school of the Institute of Fine Arts. He then went to Australia and worked with Benedict Puglisi for two years. This lovely cello represents an excellent value in a beautifully made and attractive instrument.

The elegant style of Vuillaume’s instruments has inspired us to create a new model in his honor. Using European wood, the violins are based on his Guarneri model violin, the cello on his Strad pattern. The varnish imitates his unique lustrous golden hue. C.G. Stewart *SOLD*

For many years, C.G.Stewart was a cellist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As a maker, he naturally specialized in cellos, working into the late 1930's. This interesting cello has a charming warm sound and would be an especially good choice for chamber music.

Starting in the early 1970’s Robert Miller made almost 100 violins, violas and cellos. He was awarded a gold medal at the Violin Society of America in 1978.

Ernst Heinrich Roth

The Ernst Heinrich Roth workshop may be one of the most famous in German violin making. It was established first in Markneukirchen and then in the early 1950s in Bubenreuth, West Germany. This is an exceptionally beautiful example of their best work with an especially nice golden varnish. It has a crisp upper register and a deep lower end.
