The Bernardel family was one of the most important dynasties in Parisian violin making for well over a century, not just as makers but as some of the most important dealers in Paris. Léon Bernardel worked at first with Derazey before joining the family firm Gand et Bernardel Frères. He opened his own shop in 1899 and was very successful and respected following the style of Lupot. This violin is an especially fine example of his work.

For generations, the Hoyer family of violin and bow makers has been one of the most important in Germany. Born in 1970, Thomas Hoyer trained with his father Georg and Seifert. He received his Master's certificate form the Mittenwald violin making school in 1998 and has since built one of the finest violin making workshops in Germany.

Experts generally agree that Eugene Sartory (1871-1946) was the finest bow maker from the late 19th and the first half of the twentieth centuries. His bows are elegant, beautiful and superbly crafted. They are beloved by musicians for their superb playing qualities. Sartory worked with Charles Peccatte and especially Alfred Lamy before opening his own workshop in 1889 when he was only 18 years old. He quickly became very successful. His work was very consistent based on a strengthened Voirin model. This bow is typical of his later work with a broader stronger head which he developed for changing playing styles. As one would expect, this bow has superb playing qualities suitable for a top professional or soloist. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Jean François Raffin.

Paul Hart Workshop

Born in Oxford, England, Paul Hart grew up in Provo, Utah. In 1969 at the age of 21, he started studying violin making with Peter Prier in Salt Lake, and by 1974 his skills were so highly developed that he was teaching violin making at the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake.  For the next five years Paul taught students who were to become some of the most important and influential violin makers in this country,  including Jay Ifshin of Ifshin Violins. Over the years Paul has won numerous awards for his instruments including two gold medals from the Violin Society of America, among many, many others. This beautiful cello was made in 1989 from especially fine  maple provided to Paul especially selected by Jay Ifshin. This superb cello is tonally excellent. The sound is full and warm, even on all four strings and has an easy playability, a real joy to play,

William Harris Lee

For over forty years, the  William Harris Lee firm located in the historic Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue, has been making fine violins violas and cellos. This cello is one of their finest and was made for William Moennig & Sons in Philadelphia to their high standards and includes their certificate of authenticity and a letter. This interesting cello is built on the model of Matteo Goffriller of Venice.

Before becoming a bow maker, Douglas Raguse was an accomplished violinist graduating from the University of Miami school of music. He worked with Lloyd Liu and William Salchow before setting up his own workshop in Chicago, moving to Michigan in 1996. Over the years he has won twelve gold medals at major competitions.

Otto Hoyer worked in Paris with Eugene Sartory between 1911 and 1913 and used the “ Otto Hoyer Pariser” stamp on his finest bows as with this exceptional viola bow.  Before going to Paris Otto Hoyer worked with his father Ernst August Hoyer. The frog has a “see-through” lens (known as a Stanhope lens) with an image of the maker inside. This viola bow is a superb example of this master’s best work and has excellent playing qualities, quick, responsive and relatively light.

A  graduate of the Cremona International school of Violin Making (1988) Stefan Trabucchi studied with Massimo Negroni and Claudio Amighetti. Trabucchi then worked with Marco Nolli. Over the years he has won a number of awards and medals at competitions both in Italy and internationally. Over the last several years we have been able to offer sever fine violins and cellos by Stefano and are very enthusiastic about his work.
