Bach, 6 Suites for Violoncello Solo BWV 1007-1012

sku Product SKU:  HL51480666

Publisher: Henle Urtext Edition
Composer:
Johann Sebastian Bach
Editor: Egon Voss

The most important source for Bach's Cello Suites is a copy made by his wife Anna Magdalena because the autograph is no longer extant. As further copies show, the actual musical text is scarcely problematic. However, the slurs, which are particularly important for string instruments, are very inexact and compel the editor to make difficult decisions. Our practical edition, HN 666, is in two parts. It not only offers the Urtext edition – with preface and critical commentary – but also a part for playing. The new study edition contains the Urtext part, but in addition offers a reproduction of Anna Magdalena's copy. This means that both cellists and music lovers alike are able to form their own opinion about the much discussed problems.

In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores

sku Product SKU:  HL48023059

Years in preparation, In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores presents the 27 works from 27 composers written for the 2013 recording of the same title. The publication has been closely edited by Hilary Hahn.

Ms. Hahn writes, “I was intrigued by the future of the genre and how composers might wish to redefine the form. When I pictured a novel set of favorite miniatures catching on – pieces crafted by today's minds – the idea of a commissioned-encores project planted itself in my head.”

Twenty-six composers of various ages and nationalities agreed to create pieces for the project, following the guidelines set forth. “I gave them two parameters: each piece should be under five minutes and for acoustic violin and piano.” The twenty-seventh work came from a competition, with more than four hundred entries which were reviewed by Ms. Hahn through a blind process before one piece was chosen.

“Every one of these encores was fresh, free of interpretive tradition, and each spoke a different language. My initial process was full of trial and error. I broke down techniques and phrases until I understood them on the most fundamental levels. Often, I was pushed well past my limits. As the music came into its own, however, the pieces metamorphosed into brilliant, powerful, scintillating, beautiful works of art. They compelled me to discover new layers of expression.”

Included are composer biographies and commentary from each composer about her or his encore.

Bach, Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006
HL51480356

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Klaus Ronnau and Klaus R. Violin. Henle Music Folios

Bach's six vioin soli have come down to us in a particularly beautiful fair copy made by the composer himself. They, along with the six cello suites, are regarded as musical and technical milestones of musical literature. Bach skillfully employs the resources of the violin to produce genuine polyphony in some sections through the use of arpeggiated chords and double stops. The culmination of these achievements is the famous Chaconne from the second Partita, which achieves great musical density while presenting the violinist with previously unheard-of technical challenges. The part marked by Wolfgang Schneiderhahn accomodates practical use and includes suggestions for accords and arpeggios.

String Quartet F Major Op. 135
HL51480744

Beethoven's Op. 135, one of the last works he composed, is equally famous for its compositional clarity and for the inadequacy of previous editions. Theproblem lies in the surviving sources, for Beethoven's autograph score contains a great many contradictions compared to his autograph set of parts. In 1827, after Beethoven's death, the German publisher of the first edition posthumously ironed out these discrepancies as he saw fit, and later editions simply adopted his interventions. Rainer Cadenbach's volume is the first attempt to produce an authoritative text for Op. 135. Beethoven's contradictory formulations are laid bare, allowing musicians to make their own decisions. This ambitious new edition also finds room for ideal page turns.

Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in e minor, Opus 64
HL51480720

Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Classical Period. Set of performance parts (includes separate pull-out violin part). Format: Softcover. With solo part and piano reduction. Editor: Ullrich Scheideler.

Movements: Allegro molto appassionato, Andante, Allegro molto vivace

The well-known violinist Igor Ozim has marked up Mendelssohn's approved violin part, adding fingering and bowing marks as an aid to today's performers. He has also supplied a separate commentary showing that Mendelssohn's autograph already contains useful suggestions for shaping the solo part. The piano reduction – a revised version of the one that accompanied the first edition – lies well under the fingers while remaining as faithful as possible to the original text.
